The origin of Sick Dog

This is one of those days when I’ve literally nothing to say… My kiters are enjoying an afternoon rest after our morning session (wind dropped now), and I’m bored. Will go to the beach soon to check if the kites I’ve repaired during lunch are ok, so i’m literally waiting for sunset in front of my laptop.

I’m having a detox week on board, trying to stay fit, so even a beer to spend time is not an option right now. I’ve been healthy this summer, but I could have drunk and eaten a bit better. And one of the main reason I started Sick Dog, was to have an healthy job and an healthy lifestyle, so let’s try to go back to the origin. Let’s talk a bit more about me and Sick Dog, and where it all started.

WHO AM I?

Roberto, Born and raised in Italy, Milan, I realized soon that my career as a biologist was making me unhappy. As soon as I got my university degree, I left my genetic lab and went travelling and working abroad. I did a lot of different random jobs, till I ended up working remotely for a marketing company. Happy times! That’s when I decided to move officially from Milan, and live closer to the beach. That’s when I went to Egypt.

WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Hurghada, Egypt. Yes, it all started here. It’s 2015, and those days were boring as well as today. We were playing with the idea of making a kitesurfing brand, but we were not sure about nothing honestly. We called it Sick Dog, an old joke that you can find explained here. At first it was indeed just a joke, the first year (2015) we just did one kite safari and we had 6 students – it was not really a serious job for a long time. I’m not even sure it is a serious job now. Only in 2019 I decided to really go for it – I focused all my energy in Sick Dog, and we did 9 Kite safari that year. Success!

COVID TIMES

We all remember what happened in 2020. Covid stopped all travels, and I was forced to stay at land for all year. I did not lose hope though, I started training every day and worked on Sick Dog as much as I wanted (nothing else to do indeed). As a result, 2021 saw me fit and prepared, we had 15 Kite Safari, and we started growing again.

AND NOW?

Now I’ve a big team that I trust that help me run my kite safari. Cause we predict 25 kite safari this year, and I can’t run 25 kite safari a year alone as I used to. Sophie, Kasia, Paulina and many more will be with me on board (or without me) to lead with energy, charisma and fun our boat and your holiday. When you will come on board, you will meet us and get to know our trips – it’s hard to explain what a kite safari is: it’s a kitesurfing adventure, that you need to experience once in a lifetime.

And as always, hope to see you on board sooner or later (you can check here our kite safari calendar for 2024).
