Tips during a Kite Safari – how much to tip?
It’s a tradition, at the end of a Kite Safari in Egypt, to pay tips for the egyptian crew of the boat. Salaries in Egypt are low, so the crew really relies on this money. It’s typically a small amount, 60€ to 80€ per kiter for the full week. A kite safari boat has a 8 to 10 people crew, so approximatively they earn 150€ per week each of them. I normally tell my kiters weeks before the trip how much tips will be, and at the end of the cruise I collect all tips and give them to the captain. I count on the captain to share the tips with the team on board.
Who receives the tips?
Only the Egyptian crew of the boat gets tips – Captain, Sailors, Chef and the guys that help with rooms and service on board. Sick Dog kiting team (Egyptian and European instructors) does not share the tips mentioned above, cause they do receive an appropriate salary and they are not part of the crew of the boat.
Can I pay more if I enjoy the trip?
Feel free to tip them directly any extra, if you had a good time, at the end of the trip. Try to avoid euro coins, as they normally can’t use them in Egypt. Euros or Egyptian pounds are very welcome. Also our kite instructors are happy to receive an extra tip, while I won’t accept any tip (it never really happened anyway 😉
Can I pay less if the service was not up to my standard?
Please don’t. The tips are fundamentally their salary, so they count on them, and I can promise they do their best and their work a lot. If sometimes you feel that you are not satisfied, please let me or any other member of my team know – a lot of time small misunderstandings can be fixed right away.
I love kitesurfing, travelling, and making short walks with my dog. I organize kite cruises in Egypt since 2014, you may find me in some windy beach pretty much all year round when I’m not on the boat, may it be Egypt, Cape Verde, Mauritius or Greece. I drink red wine and play (badly) the guitar. You can contact me at +201009410388 (whatsapp or calls) or just email me at info@sickdogsurf.com
Hope to see you on board one of these days!
