Survivor Island Kite Spot

Survivor island is the arriving spot of our downwinders. It’s a beautiful and remote sandy island in the middle of the Red Sea, with a reef that makes a bit complicated the arrival, and with side and off-shore wind. Let’s go more in details on this spot.

THE WIND IN SURVIVOR ISLAND

The island is very small, but not all of it is suitable for launching and landing without watershoes — that’s why I consider Survivor Island a side-shore wind or an off-shore spot only. If you have watershoes, and the tide is high enough to let you kite over the reef, then you can find any wind condition you want.

FOR WHAT LEVEL OF KITEBOARDING IS SURVIVOR ISLAND OK?

No students in Survivor island — there is no space for lessons (unless we decide to teach in deep water). We use Survivor island ONLY as our arrival place for our downwinder — it is located 2km south of Geisum Marina Spot, so normally we kite from South Geisum to Survivor island for about 30mins, a very easy downwinder, but logically a certain level of kitesurfing is needed.

DANGERS OF SURVIVOR ISLAND

Preparation is key — when you approach Survivor Island from upwind (as we always do, cause we kite there only during our downwinders) you need to know that there will be a reef, and you need to pay attention to it. Keep an eye on the water and on the tide, and listen to our downwinder briefing. Avoid kiting on the reef, and just approach the island from its EAST side and never from the WEST side. Kite always on the EAST and SOUTH side of the island. That’s it.
